Israel faces criticism for recognizing Somaliland
Last month, Israel became the first and only country to formally recognize Somaliland. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the move, and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar visited the territory last week to reinforce the decision.
"Israel is trying to undermine pretty much every existing order in the region just to demonstrate its strength," Israeli political analyst Ori Goldberg said.
Goldberg described the recognition as “cynical” and “shortsighted,” suggesting that it reflects a lack of a coherent long-term strategy. “It’s definitely reflective of the way Israel is thinking at the moment – full of despair, very short term,” he added.
British-Somali analyst and activist Adam Matan labeled the action “sinister,” arguing that Netanyahu appears to be targeting politically vulnerable or weaker Muslim entities that may be more willing to form alliances with Israel.
Netanyahu has justified Somaliland’s recognition as part of the Abraham Accords framework, a series of normalization agreements established between Israel and several Muslim-majority countries during US President Donald Trump’s first term. To date, four nations—Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates—have joined the accords.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry stated that the recognition of Somaliland was made “in the spirit of the Abraham Accords.”
